Jeanneau Well Represented in Upcoming Newport Bermuda Race!
Founded in 1906, the 635-mile biennial Newport Bermuda Race is the oldest, regularly scheduled ocean race out there. It is also one of very few international distance races held almost entirely out of sight of land. This year, beginning Friday, June 17th, We'll see four of our owners head to the starting line in three separate divisions, double-handed, Gibbs Lighthouse, and St. David's Lighthouse.
Double-Handed Division: Short-handed sailing has been on the rise over the past several years and this year the double-handed division has 17 entries, including Loblolly, a Sun Fast 3600 owned by Michael Greene. This will be Loblolly's first Bermuda race.
Gibbs Lighthouse Division: Reserved for all-out racers, the Gibbs Lighthouse Division is where you will find the true thoroughbreds often crewed by professional sailors. It's also where you will find the Sun Fast 3300, Alchemist, owned by Glenn Walters of Bluenose Yachts. Glenn is sailing with a crew of three including his son Darren as well as Ryan Novak and professional sailor, James Harayda.
St. David's Lighthouse Division: The St. David's Lighthouse Division will see not one but two Jeanneau 53's on the starting line this year including Challenge Accepted owned by Michael Cummings of Virginia and YYZ owned by Justin Bonar of Connecticut. Justin and his crew are the returning champs having won the St. David's Lighthouse Performance Trophy in 2018.
As an added bonus, the Sun Fast 330, Alchemist, will be participating in the inaugural Bermuda Short-Handed Return. As the name implies, the Bermuda Short-Handed Return is a post-Newport Bermuda Race return to Newport for Single and Double-Handed sailors. We are excited to support Alchemist and her all-female crew, professional sailors Sara Stone and Cat Hunt. More to come on this exciting event!
